Overley Hall School Overley Hall School

HOME/SCHOOL LIAISON

Entrance Hall Parents, relatives and friends may visit at any time. Visits home can be mutually agreed. Telephone facilities are available and pupils, likewise, have access to a telephone. Parents are encouraged to telephone at any time should they feel the need for reassurance and will be informed of any difficulties. It may be the School that seeks advice. Parents are advised to telephone prior to a visit to make sure that their child is in.

At the end of each School term, written reports are forwarded to parents, education authorities and other professional agencies involved with the placement of pupils. Parents are invited to comment upon these reports. Reviews of statemented needs are held annually, where each student's programme is monitored. If unable to attend, parents are invited to submit written or verbal comments. This is also regarded as an opportunity for parents to see their son/daughter in the context of a School Day and also an opportunity to develop working relationships with those who share the responsibility for the education, care and guidance of their children. Student’s in Social Services Care are reviewed at six monthly intervals.

Each Review provides discussion, followed by detailed written reports to assess progress and formulate decisions concerning future plans and programmes. Pupils' individual files are available for parents on request.

SENIOR MANAGEMENT TEAM

Mrs. Brown, Head of School, Head of Care, Domestic Bursar, Head of Adults Services and Bursar.

THE WALLED GARDEN

The walled garden is maintained by arrangement with Shrewsbury College of Art and Technology (SCAT). Post 16 pupils, where appropriate, follow the NPTC Horticulture Course. This is a nationally recognised, accredited course.

RESOURCES

Within the school setting, there are four classrooms, a life skills room, computer room, library, Snoezelen, dark room and hydrotherapy pool.

Each of the classrooms has its own computer with appropriate software for the age groups.

There are three computers in the computer room – each having different functions – “Touchscreen”, Intellikeys access and Internet access. There is a further computer in the library. Each class has their own digital camera and there is a shared video camera, laptop and projector for wider presentations. We have an array of communication aids which are used by those students who need them.

A language and speech therapist visits once every half term to work with students and staff, setting targets and reviewing on further visits. PECS is used extensively throughout the school.

We have access to the Auditory Inclusion Service who visit on a termly basis to assess individual named students with regards to hearing tests.

We also have converted stables workshops for woodwork, gardening and other craft activities. A recently re-furbished coach house enables us to carry out PE activities, as well as bringing together the whole school for assemblies, visiting theatre, drama and musical groups. The coach house has its own car park to the rear of the building as well as a small kitchen which allows training courses to be run – either internally or for external bodies.

The grounds and mixed woodland, gardens and fields, provide an enriching environment for leisure and planned curricular activities. These can range from purely sensory experiences, to the teaching of the use of tools and equipment.

The surrounding towns, hills and historical sites provide a wealth of interest and opportunity for geographical, environmental and leisure pursuits.

EXCLUSIONS
In the rare event of a child being excluded, this would only occur if the School can no longer meet the needs as laid down in the Statement or when the safety of the child and/or others, is compromised.

DISCHARGES

Children are normally included on the School roll until the end of the academic year in which the nineteenth birthday falls. At 14+, a transition review is held, where plans will be put in place as to how the child will be accommodated on leaving School.

Overley Hall will work closely with the placing authorities and parents to ensure a smooth transition to adult placement. Where these can be ascertained, the wishes of the child will form part of the decision making process.

PARENT / CARER NETWORK

There is a Parent / Carer Network with contact details for those parents wishing to be included on the list. This allows for informal discussions between parents of new referrals to access background information.
